I also get it if funds are limited or you prefer to DIY. Here are 3 ways to start learning about and DIY-ing separation anxiety training.
Listen to the Believe in Your Dog podcast
The Believe in Your Dog Podcast, hosted by Jackie Johnston. offer kind, accessible, science-based info. Episodes cover key topics like:
What is Separation Anxiety? And how it’s different from your dog having a party when you leave.
Conducting an Initial Assessment. What to look for and when to stop.
Suspending absences. A must for separation anxiety training AND it doesn’t need to cost money.
2. Read a great book
Malena DeMartini-Price covers it all with the latest data and science in Separation Anxiety in Dogs: Next Generation Treatment Protocols and Practices. Why I recommend this book:
I got a ton out of reading this book before starting Malena’s intensive course for trainers to become a CSAT .
A friend taught their dog to feel safe alone just with this book.
