Start Potty Training Guide: Simple Steps for Success
tl;dr: Potty training is all about consistency, supervision, and positive reinforcement. Pay your dog well for going outside, prevent accidents when possible, and stay patient. Progress takes time — you’ve got this!
Hey friends,
Potty training can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re also juggling kids, work, and life. I’ve been there with Trixie, and I’ve helped many families navigate this stage. The good news? With a clear plan and realistic expectations, you can set your dog up for success without frustration or punishment.
Here’s my straightforward approach to getting started:
The Basic Philosophy
Dogs work for what pays. Going potty outside should be the most rewarding option.
Prevention is everything. The more accidents your dog has inside, the longer it takes to learn.
No punishment. If there’s an accident, it’s not your dog’s fault — it’s information. Clean it up and adjust your plan.
My Start Potty Training Guide
The Golden Rules:
Take your dog outside on leash after key times: – After waking up / naps – After meals – After play – After drinking water
Reward generously — Use high-value treats (10 favorite treats!) the moment they finish going potty outside. Celebrate like they just won the lottery.
Supervise or confine. When you can’t watch them, use a crate, playpen, or tether them to you. This prevents them from developing a habit of going inside.
What to Do When Things Go Wrong
If your dog has an accident inside → No scolding. Clean thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner.
If they seem upset in the crate → Shorten crate time and give more frequent potty breaks.
If they’re having too many accidents → Increase supervision and shorten the time between potty breaks.
Timeline Expectations
Many dogs show big improvement within 3 weeks of consistent management. Some take longer, especially dogs with a history of going inside. That’s normal. Keep celebrating the wins.
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
Potty training struggles are incredibly common, and there’s no shame in needing support. Whether you want a personalized plan, help troubleshooting, or just someone to cheer you on, I’m here.
