Scripts to help toddler feel safe with dog! (1 / 2)

Wanting our kid and dog to feel safe together inspired me to become a dog trainer. It ain’t always easy! Two scenes of me helping our toddler feel safe:

INT. HOUSE - EARLY EVENING.

SCENE 1: ASK IF TODDLER WANTS SPACE FROM DOG

Small dog Trixie approaches DOOR. DOOR opens and Dad and toddler W. enter.

DAD

I’m gonna carry you to the couch so Trixie can say hi without jumping.

W

I want to watch a movie.

DAD

Me too. First snacks then movie.

Dad sets W down on RATTAN COUCH. Trixie jumps up and boops W. W smiles slightly.

DAD

Is Trixie booping you okay or do you want space?

W

It’s okay.

DAD

You know what feels okay. Let me know if you want space.

SCENE 2: MODEL ASKING FOR HELP WHEN TODDLER DOESN’T HAVE WORDS

Dad goes for snacks. W leaves couch for TV. Trixie jumps off couch and jumps up on W. W raises hands to face.

DAD

I want more space, Daddy. Touch!

Trixie boops Dad’s hand. Dad gives Trixie cheese from W's snacks.
Dad points to 2nd WHITE COUCH. Trixie jumps on couch. Dad quickly spreads peanut butter on lid of PB jar, sets lid by Trixie. Trixie starts licking PB.

DAD

You know when you need space. Was that a owie?

W

Trixie scratched my elbow. It’s a little owie.

DAD

Do you want me to kiss your elbow?

…TO BE CONTINUED
